After scouting the Globe to find the best organic and Fairtrade ingredients available, including real cola nut from Sierra Leone, Karma Cola was born.
Karma Cola's Fairtrade Story
Two years ago we had a crazy dream to offer consumers a fizzy drink that acknowledged and supported the people who originally discovered the name ingredient in the most consumed soft drink in the world – cola. After sourcing real cola nut from Sierra Leone and the best organic and Fairtrade ingredients available, Karma Cola was born.
Karma Cola, and its sister and brother Gingerella and Lemony Lemonade, not only taste good, they’re doing good, making a big difference to small villages and cooperatives where the ingredients are grown.
Karma Cola’s original recipe combines the cola nut with vanilla bean from the Forest Garden Growers Association in Sri Lanka and Fairtrade organic cane sugar from the Suminter Organic Farmers Cooperative in Bhimanagar India.
Its authentic cola flavour is completely natural, with real ingredients eliminating the need for the artificial ones - there’s no caramel colouring, no preservatives or phosphoric acid. And, as the name suggests, with Karma Cola what goes around comes around.
In addition to paying farmers a fair price, Karma Cola is working directly with cola nut farmers in Boma village in Sierra Leone, to help rebuild their crops and their communities. Part of the proceeds from the sale of every bottle goes back to the people of Boma to invest in community projects. Funds from sales of the soft drink have already helped to build a bridge to connect two villages and helped to send boys and girls to school. They’ve also contributed to building a rice hulling plant to help the villagers become self-sufficient.
Karma Cola, Gingerella and Lemony are all made with the finest Fairtrade organic cane sugar helping sugar farmers in India to improve their lives and livelihoods. All three drinks are available in independent cafes and coffee shops and in selected Waitrose stores.
Soft Drinks – Karma Cola
Karma Cola is a great tasting natural cola made with cola nut from the Boma village in Sierra Leone. Its original recipe combines the cola nut with vanilla bean grown by the Forest Garden Growers Association in Sri Lanka and organically grown and processed sugar cane from the Suminter Organic Farmers Cooperative in Bhimanagar India. Unlike many colas, Karma does not contain artificial colouring, preservatives or phosphoric acid (a cheap chemical ingredient that adds acidity to conventional cola and is good for removing rust).
The design of the Karma Cola bottle blends African imagery with the Eastern idea of karma and the western idea of ‘cola’. The blue and red iconic design represents the African water spirit, Mami Wata, who embodies both good and evil.
Soft Drinks – Gingerella Ginger Ale
Gingerella is crisp firecracker that contains Mother Nature’s magical healer, ginger, and a unique blend of lemon, vanilla, sugar and spices grown by farmers from the Forest Garden Growers Association in Sri Lanka. This cooperative of some 800 small farmers work together as a collective, standing up to middlemen and multinational agro-chemical companies to get a fair price for their crops, improve the health and productivity of their farms and the quality and quantity of their harvests.
Design is a key factor of Gingerella’s appeal. With a bit of psychedelia, a little Mucha and a lot of sass, All Good decided to celebrate all things ginger with a Barbarella-esque firecracker who fights for justice!
Soft Drinks – Lemony Lemonade
Lemony Lemonade is made with organic Femminello lemons, grown in the scorching Sicilian sun. The tart yet rich flavour is balanced with the sweetness of organic cane sugar from the Suminter Organic Farmers Cooperative in Bhimanagar India and a splash of grapefruit and other citrus flavours. There are no preservatives, synthetic flavours or artificial colouring.
The unique sweet and sour nature of Lemony Lemonade is captured in the bottle’s design. Lemony is ‘Hello Kitty’ meets punk rock - a lucky lemon that keeps on trucking, no matter what!
