Westray Chutney's Fairtrade story

I was born and raised on Westray, one of Orkney’s most northerly isles. The principal industries here have always been farming and fishing, so I am used to having all the best local fresh produce available for making our homebakes and preserves.

You will notice that rhubarb appears several times in our chutneys and preserves; well, there’s certainly no shortage of rhubarb here in Westray and time was when there was competition to see who could make the best jam for that year. Now you can judge for yourself if we know what we are talking about.

Other ingredients have to be sourced outwith the island as the weather in such a northern latitude affects what we can grow… certainly not mangoes and raisins. That is why we have concentrated on using Fairtrade ingredients. Westray is a Fairtrade Island, as is our school, and we all believe in living and trading fairly both for us here and for those abroad, although we would maybe welcome a bit of the hot sunshine that is freely available for some of the ingredients brought in from afar.
