At the news that Liam Fox has been appointed as Secretary of State for the Department for International Trade in Theresa May's new Cabinet, Fairtrade called on Dr Fox to ensure that future trade deals do as much as possible to reduce global poverty.
Tim Aldred, Head of Policy and Research at the Fairtrade Foundation said;
“Millions of farmers and workers in some of the poorest countries in the world depend on their exports to the UK. As Secretary of State responsible for renegotiating over forty years of trade deals with the world Dr. Fox’s role is not only vital for the UK – his decisions will have a huge impact on the lives of the world’s poor. We urge him to take the opportunity to negotiate trade deals that are truly fair, tackling poverty and inequality and avoiding unintended damage.”
