Tips for your Fairtrade campaign

How to achieve Fairtrade status


  • Read the five goals and the People & Planet Fairtrade Action Guide.
  • Register your campaign by emailing us. Then we can send you more information and news.
  • Get support for your campaign – have a meeting, serve Fairtrade wine and snacks and invite people to get involved. You could show some short films or use the Fairtrade Powerpoint presentation . Don’t forget to involve representatives from all parts of your university or college – academic staff, support staff and students.
  • Publicize your events or campaign progress in your student paper or local press. See a sample press release 
  • Get your Vice-Chancellor, Principal or senior staff to endorse your campaign.
  • Develop an action plan to work towards meeting the five goals.
  • Join the Fairtrade Universities and Colleges Discussion Group and share experience and ideas with committed staff and students at Fairtrade Universities and Colleges across the country.
  • Order free resources or purchase merchandise to help promote your campaign.
  • Start collecting evidence for each of the five goals. Make a note of any events you organise and keep copies of all press coverage you generate.
  • Send in your application when the steering group feels that you have met the requirements for all of the five goals.
  • If your application is successful, organise an event to celebrate so that everyone knows about your Fairtrade status. 
  • Declaring Fairtrade status is an important milestone but it is just the beginning. Plan ways to develop extend your Fairtrade campaign. Tell us about your progress one year later in your renewal application.

Keeping your Fairtrade status


  • Becoming a Fairtrade University or College is a great achievement but is just the start!
  • You need to continue to increase awareness and availability of Fairtrade products across your campus and ensure new students and staff are aware of your Fairtrade status.
  • Renewals are required annually – we will send you a reminder when yours is due.
  • Make sure your Steering Group meets regularly and keep a record of events, activities and successes in making more products available.
