Working with Fairtrade and Fairmined certified gold

The Fairtrade Foundation registers companies to use the Fairtrade and Fairmined dual stamp on consumer-ready gold products for the UK market, which are certified as complying with international Fairtrade and Fairmined Standards.

In most cases, the brand owner is the company that the Fairtrade Foundation registers as a licensee to use the stamp. However, all operators in the supply chain, from the certified mining organisations through to the licensees selling the consumer-ready product, must be registered by one of Fairtrade International's Labelling Initiatives and/or by FLO-CERT, and be allocated a unique FLO ID number. All registered companies are subject to independent physical audits to ensure compliance with the Fairtrade and Fairmined Standards, so as to protect the integrity of the Fairtrade and Fairmined dual label.

1. Understanding the Standards

Read and understand both the Fairtrade and Fairmined Standard for Gold from Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining including Associated Precious Metals, and the Standard for UK Operators.

1.2 The Standard for UK Operators is available on the following links. This document is in six parts:

2. Complete the Business Overview Questionnaire downloadable on the following link to register your interest in working with certified metal:

Business Overview Questionnaire - Gold

This applies to businesses based in the UK who wish to:

  • Use the Fairtrade and Fairmined dual stamp on products or the dual label on promotional materials and packaging.
  • Buy, sell or create Fairtrade and Fairmined Certified gold and associated precious metal products, whether in the form of an unfinished product (eg. casting grain/sheet) or finished product (eg. jewellery collection).

Completed forms should be e-mailed to gold@fairtrade.org.uk. A representative from the Fairtrade Foundation will contact you with information on next steps.

Completing the BOQ form is the first stage in registering to work with certified gold and associated precious metals, and will help us to identify whether your business is eligible to become a licensee with the Fairtrade Foundation and/or if you should register with FLO-CERT.

If your business is producing consumer-ready finished products and your BOQ application is successful, you will receive a Registration, Licensing and Certification Agreement which you will be asked to sign and return to us. This Licence Agreement outlines your terms of engagement with the Fairtrade Foundation. Once confirmed as a Licensee, you will be able to submit applications for product certification. You will also be able to submit for approval the artwork for packaging and/or promotional materials associated with these products. Please note that artwork is only approved once the related product is certified. The dual label cannot be used without written approval.

Please note: Licence Agreements will only be issued to businesses that are dedicated to building long term relationships with Fairtrade and Fairmined mining groups. Businesses should have secured a supply of certified metal and be able to show clear evidence of plans to incorporate certified metal into their product range.
