New for 2006, chocolate lovers can choose from a delicious selection of the finest Fairtrade Easter eggs. And why not get into the spirit of spring and decorate your house with the latest Fairtrade certified blooms! Because the products carry the distinctive blue and green FAIRTRADE Mark, you can be sure your Easter treats guarantee disadvantaged producers in the developing world a better deal.
“Through Fairtrade and our cooperative Kuapa Kokoo, we now have a lot of progress. We have good drinking water, toilet facilities and schools. Kuapa pay the farmers on time and there is no cheating. Before Fairtrade there was often cheating when the cocoa was weighed. Cocoa was taken into the shed and we could not see it being weighed,” says Comfort Kwaasibea, cocoa farmer from Kuapa Kokoo cocoa cooperative in Ghana, who supplies cocoa to the Divine and Dubble brands and the Co-op.
Flower farm-workers in Kenya have used money from the Fairtrade premium to buy school and sports equipment and upgrade children’s playgrounds. Future plans include buying iron roof sheets for a primary school, contributing to a new adult education centre and building bore holes to supply local communities with clean water.
There are now over 1,500 Fairtrade certified products and to help you have the perfect Easter, we have picked a few for you to try. For a full list see www.fairtrade.org.uk .
