New Fairtrade Wines For Summer

May 2006

Wine lovers will be able to benefit from the rapid growth of Fairtrade wines this summer with an exciting range of brand new wines to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark. New for summer 2006, look out for delicious varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Riesling, sweet wines and fashionable rosés.

The perfect accompaniment to a summer party, a sizzling barbeque or al fresco dining, wine connoisseurs can enjoy their favourite tipple reassured that the growers have received a fair price and premium.
"Since we have joined the Fairtrade system, we receive on a periodical basis part of the profit of the farm. My life and those of my fellow workers has changed. After Stellar Organics became a Fairtrade certified farm, the possibilities were there to improve our lifestyles and securities," says Maria Malan, Farm Manager at Stellar Winery, South Africa.

At Stellar Winery the Fairtrade price and social premium have made a real difference to employees’ quality of life. Money from the Fairtrade premium fund has been ploughed back into community projects considered a priority by the worker-elected committee. These include fencing for workers’ housing, free housing and electricity for permanent farm workers, a trained health care committee on the farm for workers, and a Community Watch program to combat crime and antisocial behavior, staffed and run by the community.

Also new for summer are rosé wines, dessert wines and a bag-in-the-box Los Robles Fairtrade Carmenere. Fairtrade certified wine is available from producers in Chile and South Africa.
There are now over 1,500 Fairtrade certified products. For a complete list see www.fairtrade.org.uk/products.htm.
