Ben & Jerry's Nuts about Fairtrade Sundae on the Common
The Fairtrade Foundation is delighted to partner with Ben & Jerry’s this weekend for the ‘Nuts about Fairtrade Sundae on the Common’. As well as visitors being able to sample a whole range of ice-creams with Fairtrade ingredients, this year’s Ben & Jerry’s festival on Clapham Common (24 and 25 July, 12 noon-8pm) will be a celebration of everything Fairtrade.
In a move that is the biggest conversion into Fairtrade products the ice-cream world has seen, Ben & Jerry’s in February announced they will be going 100% Fairtrade in the UK and throughout Europe by the end of 2011 and globally by end 2013 - which means that every ingredient they use, from sugar to nuts to cocoa, that can be Fairtrade certified, will be.
The Fairtrade flavours Chocolate Macadamia, Chunky Monkey, Vanilla and Vanilla Toffee Crunch were soon to be joined by the company’s top selling flavours Baked Alaska, Caramel Chew Chew, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Phish Food, together with new flavours Fairly Nuts and Phish Food Frozen Yogurt.
This weekend’s festival-goers will also be able to try out other Fairtrade products in the Fairtrade Taste Tent which will showcase a range from snack bars to muesli, from chocolate to nuts, and from jellybeans to raisins.
Staff from the Fairtrade Foundation will be there to answer questions about Fairtrade as actors amuse the crowd with ‘banana jousting on an inflatable gladiator rink’ and ‘banana fishing’.
“If anyone has any doubt about the difference they as an individual can make, they should look to Ben Greenfield and Jerry Cohen. They started out as two students making ice-cream from local produce and have built one of the most important modern-day companies with ethical credentials,” says Barbara Crowther, Head of Communications at the Fairtrade Foundation. Barbara will appear on the stage on both days to talk about Fairtrade.
Ben Greenfield and Jerry Cohen came specially to the UK in February to personally make the global announcement on their Fairtrade commitment.
