Magana_Flowers_Flower_Farm_in_Kenya

Magana Flowers roses are grown in modern greenhouses on the edge of Kikuyu, not far from Nairobi.

On the 18 hectare farm around 540 workers look after every step of production from cultivation to packing for transport.

Many things are different at Mangana farm compared to a conventional flower farm. Wages are above the legally required minimum and all workers and their families receive free health care.

Mothers have benefitted most thanks to Fairtrade certification. They now have a right to three months maternity leave on full pay and breast feeding mothers are given an extra hour’s break without any reduction in their wages. A nursery for workers’ children offers support and the opportunity for mothers to continue working.

Magana also uses sustainable farming methods. Six reservoirs collect rain water and reusing waste water from the green houses means the farm uses 75% less water from the local river than it did before.

In addition Magana plants 20,000 tree saplings a year in a special reforestation area.

• Support to a home for the elderly in Kikuyu

• Mosquito nets for all employees

• Running the children’s nursery

• Health education and vaccinations
