Company Story

Bubble & Balm

Bubble & Balm was the first UK company to achieve Fairtrade certification across its entire cosmetic range. We caught up with owner Sue Acton to find out what inspired her to quit her City job and set up this pioneering company.

What was the inspiration for Bubble & Balm?

I wanted to set up a company that sold everyday products which did not have a widely available Fairtrade option. At the time soap could not be certified but the Fairtrade Foundation advised me that a launch was planned, so whether by fate or just good timing I was able to set up a company which offered brand new products that were Fairtrade certified across the entire range.

Why do you think Fairtrade is important?

I think it’s common sense that we should pay people a fair wage for the work they do and I believe that paying a fair wage should really be standard business practice. The question we should ask is ‘why are you not Fairtrade?’ to companies that choose exploitative practices in their supply chains.

What is your message for British shoppers?

There are many fantastic Fairtrade products around now but it can be hard to get these products into high-street shops unless shoppers demand then. So, whether in your local store or in big multinationals, keep asking for Fairtrade and keep
buying Fairtrade!

What did Bubble & Balm do for Fairtrade Fortnight?

We launched our liquid soap range, including anti-bacterial, citrus and lavender options

What’s next for Bubble & Balm?

We’re absolutely delighted that Bubble & Balm handwash and bar soaps will be launching in selected Waitrose branches from the end of June. We’re also in the process of developing some new products for launch later this year, all of which will be Fairtrade certified.
