500 miles, 500 Fairtrade Towns

We’ve known for some that Fairtrade campaigners are a determined bunch, now they’ve proved it with a two-wheeled adventure across the country to celebrate another milestone for the Fairtrade Towns movement. The announcement of the 500th Fairtrade Town in Britain was the signal for teams of campaigners to start a cycle relay, pedalling 500 miles. Starting in Aberfeldy, the first Fairtrade Town in Scotland, they whizzed through 10 ‘Fairtrade Firsts’ before crossing the finishing line in Cardiff, the first Fairtrade capital.

Fairtrade Towns Advisor, Bruce Crowther, commented: ‘Although the campaign against poverty is a long journey, achieving 500 Fairtrade Towns in the UK is a tremendous milestone’. There are over 800 Fairtrade towns worldwide, which play a vital role in calling for a trade system that puts people, not profit, at the heart of it.

Fairtrade Town campaigners invited their MPs to sign an EDM calling on the government to reaffirm their commitment to supporting the continued growth of fair and ethical trade in the UK. The names of all Parliamentary signatories were displayed at the final event in Cardiff.
