"First of all we needed to get permission from our Headteacher. We created a PowerPoint show with information and a business plan. We also gave him a free sample. I think that improved our chances because he said ‘yes’!"

Margaret Demidecka Fairtrade Award for the Best Fairtrade Fortnight event in a school

The Fairtrade Fortnight Awards have been running for several years, but new for 2009 is a cash prize of £350 each for the best event organised by a primary and secondary school during Fairtrade Fortnight. If your school wins, you could use the prize money to strengthen Fairtrade activities in your school, and put on events in the community.

The competition is open to all primary and secondary schools. You don’t have to be a Fairtrade School to enter – we want to hear about events in any school. The judging panel will include representatives of the Fairtrade Foundation and the Justice and Peace Group, Tring. They will be looking for innovative and interesting activities which really tell the story of Fairtrade producers to a wide audience.

Applicants should fill in the form below and attach a narrative of your event (no more than one event, please, and no more than 6 pages of A4). You can attach evidence such as photos, samples of posters, leaflets or media coverage, but please note that we are unable to return these.

Your event should fulfill one or more of the following criteria:

  • Impact;
  • Imagination;
  • Educational content;
  • Relevance to the theme

Please send us your application by post to:

Margaret Demidecka Fairtrade Award was started in 2006 by the Justice and Peace Group, affiliated to Churches Together in Tring, Hertfordshire. It is given in memory of the late Margaret Demidecka, a founder member of the Justice and Peace Group and a Fairtrade supporter, who died suddenly in December 2005.
