Your step-by-step guide to becoming a Fairtrade School
- Register your interest
- When you have read these instructions, go to the Home Page to register.
- You will receive all the latest news and views in our termly e-newsletter.
- Get a steering group together
- Talk to teachers, pupils from different year groups, the School Council, and don't forget the catering staff.
- Use the Introductory PowerPoint Presentation to get people interested.
(If, when you download this powerpoint, it does not open up in powerpoint and you cannot view the notes, please right click on the link and select 'Save Link as' to save a copy on your computer)
- Audit and Questionnaire
- Find out how 'Fairtrade' your school is by doing the Audit and Questionnaire ('How Fairtrade is my school?')
- You can do them again a year later to see how much progress you have made.
- Five goals
- Read the Five Goals and start working towards them.
- Use the ideas in Section 2 of the Action Guide for achieving each of the Goals
- Start collecting evidence for your file
- Draw up an Action plan.
- Decide who is going to do what and when, and start collecting evidence for your file.
- Use the checklist in Section 3B of the Action Guide to keep a record of what you have done.
- Keep electronic copies
- Keep electronic copies of all your documents so that you can apply on-line.
- Make sure there is someone in your steering group who knows how to do this - why not make it into an IT project?
- Submit your evidence
- Start uploading your evidence whenever you like. When you are ready, begin to submit your evidence.
- If you have problems applying on-line, email schools@fairtrade.org.uk. We may be able to make exceptions in some cases.
- When you are successful, display your certificate and your electronic logo that says:

- Celebration time!
- Celebrate after all your hard work. Have a party, write to your local newspaper and display your certificate in a prominent place.
- And don't forget to renew your certificate after a year to show that you are still supporting Fairtrade (see Section 2F of the Action Guide).
