Brunel students are top of the swaps
Anyone who has studied at Brunel University in the last five years won’t be a stranger to Fairtrade. And from summer 2009, the university joined the ranks of those proudly bearing the title of Fairtrade.
Great news for fans of an ethical tipple on campus, with Fairtrade wine available in the Student Union bar, and more everyday supplies such as Fairtrade muesli, pasta and chocolate for sale in the university branch of Costcutter.
Joe Greenwood, Democratic support coordinator, Union of Brunel Students, told us what made the swap a must ‘Brunel University sees itself as a place where students can become global citizens and Fairtrade really ties into that. Fairtrade fosters understanding and provides practical examples of how actions here can have an impact thousands of miles away. As well as being ethical, the price difference in minimal in most cases. There is no logical reason not to do it!’
There’s no time to sit back though, because more swaps are on their way on campus. Joel says ‘As well as looking into stocking Fairtrade cotton on campus, we are trying to integrate Fairtrade into the curriculum for business students.’
