Making the Big Swap at school
Pupils at Ysgol Llangynfelyn primary school, Ceredigion are going to be totting up a fair few swaps between them this Fairtrade Fortnight. Teacher Rhian Nelmes says the two-week campaign has been eagerly awaited in the classrooms.
Since swapping to Fairtrade in 2007, the green and blue FAIRTRADE Mark can be found on products all over the school, from the tea, coffee and sugar in the staff room to Fairtrade cotton uniforms for pupils.
Fairtrade also features in lessons. Rhian says ‘We have integrated Fairtrade into the curriculum, for example, in geography we look at bananas from the Windward Islands and how it affects people there. Fairtrade is part of school life.’ Ysgol Rhydypennau is just one of lots of schools in the area going Fairtrade and their message to British shoppers is ‘Get involved! It’s fun and the pupils learn an awful lot about other children all over the world. They are very good at taking the message home to their parents too.’
