On the ball for Fairtrade

Students of the University of Leicester and De Montfort University, both of which are committed supporters of Fairtrade, are proving that you can swap much more than tea, coffee and chocolate this Fairtrade Fortnight.

The two universities will battle it out in the annual varsity football match at Leicester City’s Walkers Stadium on 2nd March. And both teams will be hoping to score the winning goal with a Fairtrade football.

Both the men and women’s teams competing hope that using the Fairtrade football, which ensures manufacturers in poorer countries get a fair price, will get more people onside for Fairtrade, and with more than 4,000 fans expected in the stands it’s a great way to raise awareness for Fairtrade.

Ruth Kelliher, 22, captain of the University of Leicester women’s football team, said: ‘We are really happy to be taking part in a fixture which will be promoting Fairtrade.’
