Sweetest swap for Compass group

Compass Group UK and Ireland (the UK’s largest caterer) have made the Big Swap even bigger by pledging to swap to 100 per cent Fairtrade certified sugar by June 2010. They’re leading the way in their industry with this move, and they’ve teamed up with Tate & Lyle to make it happen.

Mike Walden, Executive Director – Purchasing & Supply Chain at Compass UK says ‘Compass UK currently buys more than 1,200 tonnes of sugar a year so this is a major move for the business and one which we hope will have a big impact on the communities we are supporting by switching to Fairtrade sugar.  Our sugar will primarily come from growers in Belize, helping them to secure their future through investment in schools, hospitals and the long-term sustainability of their businesses.

During Fairtrade Fortnight, Compass’ university and college catering arm, Chartwells, will be holding events at various college and university locations to show off their Fairtrade products and tell everyone about the communities they support. Look out for the FAIRTRADE Mark on sugar sachets in a café near you now!
