September 2007: Fairtrade comes to Fire Brigade HQ
Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has installed a Fairtrade vending machine for staff to enjoy at its headquarters in Upperton Road. Initially the team wanted a Fairtrade option to be added to their existing vending machine but instead chose an alternative supplier that was entirely Fairtrade.
All drinks, including hot chocolate, tea and coffee now bear the Mark that 'guarantees a better deal for Third World producers'. They will also now look to see if the confectionery machines could include Fairtrade.
Deputy chief fire officer Chris Large said, "All our hot drinks sold through our vending machine are Fairtrade and for us this is the obvious and right choice to make. "We know that the coffee has been ethically sourced, is certified organic and is environmentally friendly."
Mick Feather, learning and development co-ordinator, said, "East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is very supportive of Fairtrade and in making Eastbourne a Fairtrade town. "We would urge local businesses, particularly in the public sector, to follow our example."
