The former Chair of Fairtrade International, Marike de Peña, has been confirmed as a member of the Fairtrade Foundation Board of Trustees.
A passionate and tireless advocate for the power of Fairtrade, Marike was named among the “10 women who rule in the world of food” at the Milan Expo 2015. Marike is committed to support small farmers, and co-founded the Banelino cooperative, which works to defend the interests of Dominican Republic banana farmers in the market, promoting strong farmer alliances and sustainable development through trade.
Marike brings a wealth of experience to the Fairtrade Foundation having been involved with Fairtrade since 1996 and was the first producer representative to chair the Fairtrade International Board. Fairtrade is committed to ensure producer voices are globally heard and is 50 per cent owned by the farmers and producers it represents.
Marike de Peña said:
“I am delighted to join the board of the Fairtrade Foundation. Throughout my time as part of the Fairtrade movement I have seen first-hand its ability to combat poverty and unlock the power of producers.
“Fairtrade empowers producers to drive development and recognises the underestimated expertise of people in the developing world to take charge of their futures and make informed decisions about their business and community.
“The UK is Fairtrade’s biggest market and I am excited to support the work of the Foundation to promote Fairtrade to the British public and strengthen the relationship between consumers and the people who make the things they love to eat, drink and wear.”
