Response to Sainsbury’s Sustainability update on Fairly Traded Tea

The Fairtrade Foundation is pleased to see greater detail and progress in Sainsbury’s Fairly Traded pilot, demonstrating the retailer has listened to concerns raised by the Fairtrade movement.

Though we remain concerned over the reduced empowerment for farmers and the loss of independence in standards setting, we can see that the decision-making process in the pilot has improved and we are pleased to see the acknowledgement of the Fairtrade model as the benchmark for prices paid to farmers.

The Fairtrade Foundation is encouraged by Sainsbury’s progress and the commitment to only expand Fairly Traded in tea in line with sales growth. Although it will take time to fully evaluate the impact of the pilot, we hope that the farmers involved will soon see some of the promised benefits of this new scheme from the world’s largest Fairtrade retailer.
