Celebrate World Fair Trade Day 2014

Man carrying bananas

This Saturday, 10 May is World Fair Trade Day. All around the world, thousands of people are using this day to call for fairer terms of trade for small farmers and workers.

Many different Fair Trade organizations, producers and supporters are taking part in a wide variety of events, reflecting the creativity and diversity of the fair trade movement.

Here’s a flavour of some of the activities Fairtrade and our members are involved in. Why not get involved and show your support for Fair Trade!

Going Bananas for Fairtrade

Campaigners in the UK are busy gathering as many signatories as possible for their petition to make bananas fair, which they will hand to Department of Business, Innovation & Skills following World Fair Trade Day. Over 50,000 have signed so far - visit http://foncho.fairtrade.org.uk/ to sign the petition.

Meanwhile Fairtrade fans in Sweden are asking their workplaces to switch to Fairtrade bananas and want at least 200 signed up by Saturday.

Vote for Fair Trade in the EU elections

751 European parliamentarians representing 28 countries will be elected in the upcoming European Parliament (EP) elections

Wouldn’t it be great if they all supported Fair Trade in their policies?

The Vote4FT campaign (http://www.fairtrade-advocacy.org/about-the-campaign) is calling for just that. Across Europe, Fair Trade campaigners are asking EP candidates to support Fair Trade, and for Fair Trade to be part of the European Parliament’s policy agenda.

Several high profile EP candidates have already pledged their support and signed the Vote 4FT manifesto, including Martin Schulz, common candidate for the Party of European Socialists and Ska Keller, co-candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission for the European Green Party. In Luxembourg all but one of the candidates have already signed.

Why not ask your European Parliament candidate to sign the manifesto?

Or if you’re in Strasbourg, check out the main stage of the European Youth Event, where young Europeans and EP candidates will hold a public debate on how the EU should support Fair Trade.

Fairtrade Producers Join the Celebrations

Fairtrade farmers and workers are also joining in the festivities with a variety of activities.

Banana farmers in the Dominican Republic are organizing a family sports day with the local community to promote Fairtrade.

In Guatemala and Mexico, producers are inviting local people to join them on a Fair Trade walk with the slogan “Un camino de solidaridad y justicia con los pequeños productores”

Lebanese and North African farmers, Beirut shoppers, Fairtrade International and Fair Trade Lebanon staff will all be coming together for a massive Fair Trade lunch in the centre of Beirut, celebrating the finest of local and Fair Trade cuisine. https://www.facebook.com/events/235678893291501/?ref=22
