Twelve universities have achieved the prestigious Fairtrade University and College Award in 2025, continuing to champion ethical consumption and global justice across campuses in the UK. Among them, University of Reading earned the highest ‘three star’ award for exceptional achievement across a broad range of activities including curriculum development, sustainable procurement, and student engagement.
The Fairtrade University and College Award recognises sustained commitment over two academic years to increasing awareness and action on trade justice and globalisation—a period that continues to challenge institutions due to shifting educational landscapes and growing global crises.
The award is given in partnership by the Fairtrade Foundation and Students Organising for Sustainability UK (SOS-UK). It encourages collaboration between students, staff, and students’ unions. The programme supports institutions in equipping students with the understanding and tools to drive positive global change.
Sarah Brazier, Head of Campaigns at the Fairtrade Foundation said:
“After celebrating 30 years of Fairtrade in the UK last year, Universities play a vital role in the Fairtrade movement. The passion and energy of students are central to creating a fairer world. Sales of Fairtrade products on campuses, speaking up for farmers and workers across the globe, and student-led initiatives have all contributed to change.
As we approach the end of the 2025 academic year, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you and congratulations to all of you – the university staff and students who have gone above and beyond in their support of the Fairtrade movement through your award submissions. Your commitment and creativity continue to drive change. Together, we can continue to grow a fairer, more sustainable future for everyone”.
